Danny Oldman may hide his loneliness behind his even temper and cheerful smiles, but his friends know he seems to spend an awful lot of time either working or staying at home and hasn't had a date in a long time. Danny lives for his job and does it really well, but all these years of being first a police officer and then the sheriff and seeing awful crimes have left him feeling sad and lonely. He knows he has been drinking more and more just to get through the night and it can't be good. On some nights he just gets a takeaway and eats it quietly in his car, not in a mood to talk to anybody. This is how Danny happens to witness a woman clearly trying to run away from an abusive husband or boyfriend who catches up with her and drags her out of the car by hair. When Danny intervenes he is just doing the right thing, as a sheriff and a decent man, as hopefully anybody would. The woman gratefully acknowledges his help and admits that she has a concealed gun with a permit. Who knows how the night might have ended, had Danny not arrested Matt Gaudet.

Danny knows cases like these are not easy and far from being over with the arrest. First of all, Skylar will have to prove what has been happening, even if she manages to do so and victims of domestic abuse rarely report this crime, the perpetrator might still get away with a minimum punishment, while Skylar will have to uproot all her life, trying to find a place where she can feel safe. At least, Danny can help her with this by taking her to his friends' ranch. Danny and Skylar went to the same school and he even had a crush on her, but she always had big dreams and it was clear she'd leave their small town in search of something bigger.

When Matt Gaudet's lawyer gets him out on a $500 bail and threatens Danny, insinuating that the arrest was a set up, Danny finds out that Matt comes from one of the richest and most powerful families in Texas. He also knows he has to help Skylar.

Fans of Donna Grant will be delighted with this continuation of the Heart of Texas series. There is something comforting in coming back to the same setting and finding out how the familiar characters continue living their lives. If you are new to the series, you might still find yourself charmed by the setting and the cast. Danny Oldman is a good man who knows right from wrong and who is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in (swoon) and it seems that he almost has been waiting for Skylar to come back into his life because she is The One for him (double swoon). Skylar is trying to work out ho how to get her own life back without putting other people in danger. A romance between them is a predictable, but sweet story of second chances, and it is difficult to resist the charm of this trope. There is a lot of drama-any true love needs to overcome obstacles- and there is a Happily Ever After, of course, which makes this book so suited for this season when we tend to focus on love, family, and hope for new beginnings.

Thank you to Edelweiss and St.Martin's paperbacks for the review copy provided in exchange for an honest opinion.

This is my first read by Donna Grant and I think the word that I am looking for here is "delightful"!!!!

I really liked the small town romance feel this book had while still incorporating a very real and true to life situation here- Skylar the heroine was being stalked, terrorized and physically abused by her Ex.
Danny the local sheriff was beyond charming.
Loved this Cowboy!!!

This book really ended up having it all, some intense drama with equally wild action and a great suspense plus a "wonderful" second chance romance in a charming "small town" setting.

I absolutely need to check out the rest of this series by this author ASAP.

I really liked Danny. He seemed to subconsciously wait for Skylar to come back into his life. He had a crush on her in High School and she moved away as soon as they graduated. He never got serious with anyone else in the time they were apart and I like that it might have been because his heart was already taken.

Skylar also had a crush on Danny in high school. If only these two had the guts to approach each other, but then Danny had a point when he said it just wasn't their time yet. Great couple.

This also had some pretty exciting drama with the ex stalking Skylar and his very, rich family trying to bail him out. Things escalated pretty quickly which made for a fast paced read. I loved how all the guys banded together, and the women too. There is still several single men in this tight group so I expect more to come in this series.

A Cowboy Like You is the most recent book in the Heart of Texas series and I have been having such a fun time with these books and this whole world this author has created. I have to say I am highly impressed with seeing how she handles contemporary westerns with a blend of suspense thrown in. She definitely has done such a superb job in transferring from genre to genre. And as someone who adores western romantic suspense, I can't recommend this author enough.

Our story begins with our heroine, who is in danger. Skylar is shocked that her live in boyfriend, a man she thought owned her heart, is not the man she believed him to be. Matt turned out to be abusive and controlling and highly manipulative. And now she had thought she had found freedom but then he caught her again but then the sheriff of the county where she is attacked, comes onto the situation and saves her and takes her to a safe haven....now he takes her to his family's ranch which is built like a fortress. Skylar is realizing that she needs to stand against Matt and his powerful family. But as she is working to rebuilding her life, she finds something unexpected in Danny's embrace....a love worth fighting for

A Cowboy Like You was such a fun and intense book which shouldn't surprise me as its Donna Grant writing this. But the more I have read from this series the more I am falling in love with this ranch and this family who runs in. I just love how they come together and are so supportive of each other. Its such fun to see these two connect and find their way out of this tense filled situation. I really liked how this author implemented the villain's POV throughout the book, it allows us to see his motives and his actions to getting his revenge against Skylar. It also portrayed how wealth has power in many ways but that truth and justice can win against everything. I really respected seeing the various elements that this author placed into the story.

The romance that builds between Danny and Skylar but they have history. This is an unrequited love story. Danny and Skylar knew each other in high school. But Danny was never brave enough to approach her and both held a connection without even realizing it. Now they have found each other and their chemistry is highly explosive as is the danger they are in. For appearances, they have to hide what they feel for each other so that Skylar's ex doesn't realize the truth. I loved seeing the sexual tension build between them as they find their way secretly.

Overall I found A Cowboy Like You to be a western gem that embodies the bold and daring of the west with the thrills to embrace within it.

“A Cowboy Like You” is a well written and addictive story that draws you into the life of Danny Oldman, a positively handsome Lone Star sheriff. He is married to his job and longs to have the kind of love and relationship that others have, however the one person he loves is an old high school crush that has made a new life in Houston, TX.

It is not until Skylar Long walks back into Danny's life that old memories of her start to resurface. His heart stirs up old feelings and a hope that he can get a second chance to win her heart. There is only one problem that could keep them apart and that is her crazy obsessive ex-boyfriend who is bent on having Skyler for himself and will not let anything get in his way...not even Danny. He must protect her at all cost if he wants to get into her heart.

This story is well-rounded with its share of intimacy, friendship, trust and suspense that had me turning the pages as well as loving the rekindling relationship between the two characters. Danny and Skylar are truly made for one another and this book was amazing from start to finish.

Donna Grant is a newcomer as authors go to this reader. I thought the story was sweet, wonderful, a bit witty in areas, delightful with a pinch of suspense. It has the kind of drama that makes you believe that regardless of the circumstances one sees on the outside, when trust and faith are introduced... love will prevail.

Thanks very much to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my fair and honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Another great book by Ms. Grant, not only can she do dragon kings but also cowboys. Danny is the local sheriff and he once loved Skylar. She left, but now she's back and trouble is following her. Danny is her knight with a shiny star, and lots of hot lovin'. Lots of help from the previous couples, as well as couple of yummy friends who I hope get their own books.

*REVIEW* ❤❤❤❤
A Cowboy Like You is a sweet second chance romance. Danny and Skylar were high school sweethearts, but the relationship ended, and Skylar left small town life behind. Now, years later, Danny is the town Sheriff, single(he never got over Skylar),and the woman he has always loved is back in town. Skylar is fleeing from her obsessive abusive ex boyfriend. When Danny and Skylar meet again, it's as if no time has passed, and the chemistry between them is stronger than ever. As they figure out where this relationship stands and how they feel, Skylar's ex has not given up his pursuit and stalking of her. It's up to Danny, and a few guys from town, to keep Skylar safe. I love Danny and Skylar. They are a charming couple with so much potential for a wonderful future together. The story is entertaining, delightful and well written with a plot that will hold your interest from beginning to end. I'm interested in reading about some of the secondary characters in their own stories, perhaps? An excellent choice for all romance readers!

A Cowboy Like You was an enjoyable read with a second chance at love romance and a fantastic group of side characters.

Sheriff Danny Oldman is married to the job, at least that’s what he tells people when they ask why he’s still single. But in reality, Danny never got over his high school crush, Skylar Long, who moved away after graduation. So when Danny runs into Skylar as she’s fleeing an abusive relationship, he jumps at the chance to protect her. Skylar never imagined her perfect boyfriend would turn out to be a nightmare and she’s desperate to escape him. Seeing Danny again brings back all the old feelings she had for him, but when her obsessive ex refuses to let her go, Skylar wonders if she’ll ever be free to love again.

Danny is an incredibly sweet man and he was definitely my favorite thing about this book. He’s genuine and loyal to his friends which are great traits for a romance hero. I loved the friendship group he had and I found myself eager to learn more about them. Skylar was also a fantastic character and I admired her strength and determination to fix her situation. The situation with Skylar’s ex is horrible and while those types of relationships do happen, it was terrible reading about it. Reading about the abuse as well as the over the top ending to the book did detract from my enjoyment a bit, but that’s a personal preference thing.

I typically enjoy second chance romances, so I was looking forward to reading this book. Danny and Skylar were both interested in each other in high school, but neither acted on that attraction as they were sure the other wasn’t interested. Due to once being friends, Danny and Skylar easily fall back into that friendship when they meet again. While I did really love their friendship, their romance hit a few snags for me. My main issue with the relationship was that I had a hard time buying how quickly Danny and Skylar got together. With Skylar’s situation, I expected the book would take place over a longer period of time when it actually takes place over the course of only a few weeks. Had more time been given for Skylar to recover from her abusive ex and for the relationship between her and Danny to develop, I would have enjoyed the romance more.

Overall A Cowboy Like You was a good read and I will definitely be checking out the other books in the series sometime soon.

A Cowboy Like You (Heart of Texas #4) takes the handsome Lone Star sheriff, Danny Oldman, and spotlights his life and ethics.
He has lived for his job, looking out for those in this town. No real personal life, no love interest...just being wedded to his position.

It could be due to a young crush on Skylar Long. She caught his eye and when she left their hometown, he sort of shut down.

Skylar left for the big city and thought she had found her one...only to become a possession. The man was obsessive and abusive. She runs from Houston and goes back to where she used to feel safe to hide.

One night Danny is doing his usual night and comes across a woman fleeing a man on the road. This was something that looked serious as she was being physically dragged from her car as she attempted to escape. This was not right and Danny steps in as his position would require. He arrests the man and the woman turns out to be his young crush, Skylar.

We see how evil the man is who doesn't want to give up Skylar; he is wealthy, powerful and will stop at nothing. Danny decides to take matters in his own hands and finds a safe place for Skylar to protect her. What happens next is the rekindling of feelings for both of them.

This story had romance, intrigue, suspense, and all the necessary connections to make it work.

Danny is as loyal and as dependable as the day is long. He is also lonely and maybe spending a little too much time alone with a bottle of cheap whiskey at night. While he enjoys a takeout meal at a local lookout point, a car pulls in and with it trouble. Thankfully, he is there to stop a violent altercation and save a young woman…who turns out to be Skylar Long. The girl he had a crush on throughout high school.

Skylar is trying to leave an abusive relationship and Danny sets out to help her. Danny reaches out to Clayton to offer Skylar a safe place to hide while the law does its part to protect her.

The tale that unfolds sheds light on the darker sides of domestic violence, families with power and could have been pulled from some of today’s national headlines.

Swoons, danger, friendships and some intense moments made for an addictive read. While the outcome may have been predictable, the twists and turns along the way kept me flipping the pages.

The romance moved quickly as romantic suspense stories do, but Grant had me falling for it and their chemistry felt genuine. Their shared past and friendships helped round out the story.

Fans of the series will get to see key characters, and there are more whose stories I am hoping we get to read. I’d gladly spend time with them and love coming to visit the Easton ranch. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

I received an ARC of this book to read through NetGalley in exchange for a fair review. A Cowboy Like You is the fourth book in Donna Grant’s Heart of Texas series. It can be read as a stand-alone as I have not read the other books in the series and did not find that I felt I was missing anything. This is a second chance at love story. Sherrif Danny Oldman has never gotten over his high school crush Skylar Long so when a chance meeting allows him to rescue her from her abusive boyfriend he is delighted to find that she too had an unrequited crush on him back in high school. I was a bit disappointed that the characters had several TSTL moments and thought that instead of hopping into a sexual relationship immediately a slow burn would have been more effective. I feel that I must give a content warning for brutal violence as well so I can’t say that this book was one that I would recommend. Medium Steam. Publishing Date November 26, 2019

A Cowboy Like You was quite the read! Intense drama, great suspense, one charmingly sweet cowboy, and a stronger-than-she-knows heroine, there was so much happening, I couldn’t turn away! I haven’t read previous books in this series and had no trouble following who’s who. However, my curiosity was definitely engaged about recurring characters and I can’t wait to read this backlist!

Cowboys and love go so well together….

If you haven’t been reading this series than Danny and Skylar will be the start of a happy read-a-thon. This series is home, family and love all wrapped up in cowboys. In other words, reading heaven!

Danny and Skylar are old friends. Years earlier, they wanted different things, in different places. Their reunion was sudden, unexpected and marred by a dangerous situation that Skylar couldn’t get away from. Danny’s protective streak was instantly on high alert and family and friends quickly circled the wagons as well. Skylar didn’t have one friend in town, she quickly had many.
And did she need them!

Their courtship was complicated by the situation but made even sweeter because of it. Danny was everything Skylar needed and their relationship was everything they both deserved… Sweet and emotional, this was a great instalment in a must-read series. ~Diane, 4 stars

Copy kindly received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I quite enjoyed this one. The characters were all likeable, apart from the ones we're meant to hate (and boy did I hate those ones), and it dealt with some serious real life issues.

We've met our hero Danny, in the other books in the series, and his friends at the East Ranch. As usual they all play a big role in the story, just this time it's Dannys personal story.

Our hero is Skylar and I won't say much about what's happening with her, except that its horrible and was dealt with in a good way with the writing of this story.

It did maybe drag out a little too long, but at the same time, everything was dealt with accordingly, and there were no loose ends with the storyline.

Enjoyed this one, and would recommend. Also would be interested in reading more about the other characters.

This ‘Heart of Texas’ romance is an intense, thrilling read with a sweet heartwarming romance that makes even the Grinch believe in HEAs. The chemistry between these two strong, stand out characters sizzles from every page and the relationship between them is sweet and passionate and full of emotions that makes it easy for the readers to relate to and understand what motivates these characters.

The plot is fast paced and full of suspense and excitement that builds throughout the story keeping the readers fixated on what’s happening and their toes bounding on the floor in anticipation. Some twists that come from the couple themselves, some twists that comes from the ex-worm and some twists that comes from the ex-worm’s family keeps everyone on their toes and adds to the excitement while some violence breaks readers hearts and has them calling for the ex-worms head. This entertaining read is full friends, a thrilling conclusion to the bad guy and a holiday ending worthy of the season.

A Cowboy Like You by Donna Grant is book 4 in the Heart of Texas Series. This is the story of Skylar Long and Danny Oldman. I have read the previous books but feel you could make this a standalone book if you wish to do so. Danny has always had a crush on Skylar when they were younger but she left town and he stayed to become the Sheriff of the the town. Of course his feeling for her hasn't really gone away so when she returns to town this may be his chance to win her back. Skylar had to return to her home town after her ex has become obsessed with her. So she has return which has put her back with Danny. Danny has awaken feelings in her that she thought to not have for him but danger for her still haunts her.

I really felt for Skylar, her ex wasn't just an asshat, he was a nasty piece of humanshite.

Danny and Skylar knew each other in HS, and he fancied her, but nothing ever happened. They meet again as she is running from her ex. Ok so yes not the best time to meet again, and sure I do wish more time had gone by. But then again, if you fall in love you fall in love. And they do try to take it slowly, and not you know jump each other at once.

The ex was a abusive, possessive scumbag. I hated him so much. And I want to say more, but spoilers, but oh it made me mad.

Danny was a good guy (I had to ask Carole about the whole cop vs sheriff thing and I still do not get it). But yes he is the sheriff.

Skylar was strong and determined. They were perfect for each other.

But before that there is a lot of ex drama, and more drama. And danger.

I liked it. There are lot of background people from previous books, but it still work great as it is.

I think of this series this one had been my favorite..We get reacquainted with Danny the towns sheriff and he finds himself lonely, and on one specific night he was remembering his high school crush the only girl he ever really thought of. Skylar is running for her life from her abusive boyfriend, while running she stops at a rest area and about to get killed when Danny comes to her rescue, Danny the guy she had a crush on in high school. Danny rescues Skylar but could not believe it, it must be fate. Lies are revealed about the ex and just trying to keep her safe, luckily for them they have the help of the Harpers and Eastons..Enjoy!

A wonderful addition to the series (I've read other books in the series before) in general, and a story I just really enjoyed reading from beginning till end.

It wasn't anything overly spectacular and quite predictable, which is why I didn't rate it higher than 3,5 stars. But nonetheless, it was a book I was always excited for to pick up at the end of the day, when I read it on my Kindle in bed.

It was a fast paced read thanks to the enjoyable writing style.

I like the main characters in this one a lot, as well as the minor characters that we've come across in previous books (although, the book can be easily read as a stand alone as well btw!). They are all such a great bunch of people to get to know.

The Second chance romance was really well written in my opinion and I liked the small presence of suspense present in the story as well.

Overall, a contemporary romance that's a good in between read. I'd definitely recommend picking up the entire series, so you get to read the stories of all the characters you come across. It makes it that much more fun when you read later written installments and see characters reoccur in each other's story.

(This review was written after receiving an ARC of the book from the publisher and Netgalley. The fact that I got the book for free, doesn't mean my opinions aren't my own because they are!)

••••••••••••

REVIEW: A COWBOY LIKE YOU is the fourth instalment in Donna Grant’s contemporary, adult HEART OF TEXAS romantics suspense series . This is Lone Star sheriff Danny Oldman, and Skylar Long’s story line. A COWBOY LIKE YOU can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from several third person perspectives including Danny and Skylar A COWBOY LIKE YOU follows the building relationship between Lone Star sheriff Danny Oldman, and Skylar Long. Years earlier Skylar had fallen for her high school crush Danny Oldman but Skylar believed Danny never knew Skylar existed. Fast forward to present day wherein Skylar has returned to her hometown in an effort to escape her abusive past. A parking lot confrontation with her ex Matt Gaudet finds Sheriff Danny Oldman rescuing our heroine, a woman he has not been unable to get out of his mind. What ensues is the building relationship between Skylar and Danny, and the potential fall-out as Skylar’s past is determined to destroy the man with whom our heroine has fallen in love.

Danny Oldman has never forgotten about Skylar Long. With her return home, Danny finds himself looking forward to something more with our story line heroine but Skylar’s past is seeking revenge for perceived sins, rejection and embarrassment, revenge that pulls Danny into a world out of his control. Skylar is desperate to escape the abuse of her most recent ex but Matt Gaudet has a reputation buried by his family’s money, a reputation that is dangerous and dark.

The relationship between Danny and Skylar is a high school friends to lovers; a relationship based on mutual attraction and the fear of rejection. Danny is desperate to start a romance with our story line heroine but struggles with the threats against her life, and the people she loves. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Navy SEAL Clayton East and Abby Harper (The Christmas Cowboy Hero #1), Brice Harper (Cowboy Cross My Heart #2), former Green Beret Caleb Harper and veterinarian Audrey Martinez (My Favorite Cowboy #3); Jace Wilder; Cooper Owens; Skylar’s ex Matt Gaudet, his brother Spencer as well as the indulgent parents.

A COWBOY LIKE YOU is a story of abuse, power and control; of vengeance and betrayal; of love and happily ever after. The premise is exciting and engaging; the characters are energetic and colorful; the romance is seductive and sexy. A COWBOY LIKE YOU is a wonderfully spirited addition to the author’s Heart of Texas series.

Hold on to your hats, because this stoic, lonely cowboy will steal your heart! Sheriff Danny Oldman’s priority is keeping people in his rural Texas county safe, but no number of calls and hours on the job can ease his loneliness, in spite of the close friends he has. When his high school crush finds her way back to Lone Star, however, everything changes.

Skylar Long put Lone Star, Texas, in the rearview mirror for the excitement of the big city soon after high school, but she finds herself right back there as she flees her abusive boyfriend. He follows her down the highway to a rest stop, but Sheriff Oldman is there to intervene, and Danny vows to keep Skylar safe as she uses the legal system to permanently rid herself of her ex and his family's affluence and old money.

This one has everything I love in a good cowboy romance. A small-town charm with unbreakable bonds between friends. A strong, protective hero who will do anything for those he loves. A sultry romance with an air of suspense that keeps me riveted to the page and cheering on the characters. It brings me back to my cowboy romance roots courtesy of Carolyn Brown and BJ Daniels, and Danny and Skylar owned my heart from the first page to the last. Plan your next cowboy adventure with them, because I have no doubt you’ll love this one as much as I do!

The fourth book has the sheriff Danny Oldman who is still single, and being has brought him to a rest stop to eat his dinner. Tired of eating alone at least is has something to look at. It is then that he hears a commotion to the side and sees a man smashing a car window as he is yelling at the woman inside, he also makes threats to her and strikes her. Once he arrests said man he realizes that he and the woman know each other. Skylar Long has been wanting to get away from her boyfriend for a while now and now she has run to a town where she once felt at peace. She was not expecting to see Danny and for him to be sheriff, even though the last part did not surprise her for he was always helping someone when they were younger. After the arrest of her boyfriend, it is revealed that he comes from a wealthy family in Houston and everything he told her was false. Dealing with him and his family hiring an attorney she also finds that she has feelings for Danny and he has them for her. Really what this story is about is what can and does happen to women who are stalked by ex’s and it must be terrifying for them and a piece of paper will not stop them though you have to start there. Overall a very good book. I received this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 4 stars. Follow us at https://www.1rad-readerreviews.com

Danny and Skylar were high school friends that meet up by chance when she’s on the run from an abusive boyfriend. Danny, the Easts and Harpers become her knights in shining armor to protect her from her rich, dangerous ex. I felt even though they knew each other many years ago, the romance was extremely fast for someone who literally just days ago ran away from a very abusive man. The ending of the book had some violence, just as a warning for people that have triggers. The plausibility of the end was a stretch too. Let’s just say some super human strength was involved. I’ve read the whole series and I’m familiar with all the characters so I think that helps when understanding their close dynamic. I appreciated that DG didn’t retell the others’ stories. I liked this story but it wasn’t one of my favorites of the series.

I love the covers of this series. They make me want to get in them and have a cowboy to call mine.
Danny and Skylar are that typical teenage couple who have crush, but no one is brave enough to make the first move, and when the courage comes, the opportunity has passed. And that made Danny heartbroken.
Years later, Danny's crush returns to town, and now she has serious problems when her ex decides never to stop bothering/stalking her.
Now is the time for Sheriff Danny Oldman to take action, just like the boy/man in love he always was, and this time he won't let Skylar get away.

If you don't follow this author and her books you should. This particular book is about Danny and Skylar and old friends coming back together through a very difficult time. It has a great cast of characters and some nail biting moments. This is a fantastic book and one to continue to read over and over again.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

If you’re a Donna Grant fan you know she has a way of pulling you into the world she created. If you’ve read the other 3 books in this series you know how Danny has always been a friend to the East’s and Harper’s. It was great to see him get his own story even if he had to survive he’ll to get it. This story is real and unfortunately relatable to many. Skylar finds herself in an abusive relationship and goes through hell to survive. I’m looking forward to the next cowboy adventure.

It is not within my being to understand the need to beat on another person. So I normally avoid books that have abuse as the story line. Yes, this is a second chance romance but it doesn't ring true to me that she would even consider jumping back into a relationship while still running from an abuser. From the standpoint of Danny, he has created a world for himself that we can envy. He has his dream job and an amazing circle of friends. Now he has a chance to realize a relationship with his high school crush. But as a sheriff shouldn't he have better sense?
I actually liked the book but saw no touch with my reality so couldn't relate at all.

This story grabbed me from the first chapter. I did not want to have to put it down. The story flows smoothly, has well developed characters, deals with real-world issues, and puts it all together seamlessly. We meet the two main characters; one is a small county Sheriff and the other was the Sheriff's crush in high school. They meet for the first time since high school graduation; almost ten years later, under very unsavory conditions. Due to the Sheriff's honesty and real caring, he is surrounded by a wonderful support team in his friends and colleagues. These friends don't hesitate to come the Sheriff's aid when needed. The author's writing made me want to care about these characters and route them on to their HEA. I recommend this story to those that enjoy a good intrigue story sprinkled with romance.

This book was received as an ARC from Donna Grant’s ARC Angels, the following opinions and commentary are my own and no way reflect the greater DG Groupie Community. This book is a part of the Heart of Texas series, and is a Contemporary Romance novel. Full disclosure, I am not a fan of Contemporary Romance, but I am a HUGE fan of Donna Grants many paranormal series.

This book was hard for me to read due to the nature of the plight of the heroine. She is trying to escape an abusive relationship, any and all issues I had with this book reflect on ME and not the author. The imagery she used to describe certain scenes brought up long buried memories, so the book IS well written and realistic. I recommend this book for people who may find themselves in an abusive relationship, or a gift for someone you love who needs to get out. Domestic Violence survivors should think hard before reading this one. There is hope and help out there you just need to be brave enough to ask for help. Well done Ms Grant, Five Stars

⭐⭐⭐⭐

The cover doesn’t tell us much except that we’re dealing with a good-looking, clean-cut, hardworking cowboy. But that’s probably enough to get most of us who like this genre to buy the book!

Danny’s just eating his take-out at the rest stop on his night off as the local sheriff when a fancy car pulls in and parks. Then a second expensive car pulls in next to the first one.

Skylar drove past the bar and checked to be sure that Matt was there with his friends before hightailing it out of Houston. She wasn’t going to stick around to be Matt’s punching bag. When she saw headlights in her rearview mirror, she pulled into the rest stop and parked. Sure enough, Matt pulled into the space next to her and stepped out of the car. He slammed his hands on the hood of her car. The dent could be hammered out, she knew. Broken bones were much harder to heal.

It wasn’t until Matt had been taken away in a cruiser by the deputy that Danny and Skylar got to see each other closely enough to recognize each other. There was the girl he never felt he was good enough to try for; and “she knew that if anyone could protect her, it was Danny Oldman.”

This is a second chance western love story that takes a young sheriff who’s headed towards being a lonely drunk in spite of his good friends’ best efforts and a former local girl who escaped to the big city and liked it until she ran into domestic violence and brings them back together to heal each other. We seem to see domestic violence a lot more in romances these days as it becomes something authors feel they want to address or expose in any way they can. Ms. Grant deals quite well with it in her story. She also has created very good characters for us in this book. You feel for Danny in the first chapter when he is thinking about his loneliness and his job, about eating or not and about drinking. You can understand how he has come to this point where it’s almost more of an effort than it’s worth to get dressed and get something to eat because there is nothing to eat in the house. The author makes you feel his despondency. You also feel the hope spark when Danny and Skylar recognize each other at the rest stop. Ms. Grant does a wonderful job drawing us into the feelings of her characters and making us part of the story. There’s plenty of action later on as well. And as it’s a second chance story, love wins out in the end. So we do have a HEA with this one. Recommended.
